Big Pine Key & No Name Key

The Key Deer

Just a across a small bridge from Big Pine Key is No Name Key. Here we saw several Key Deer, just before sunset. The deer had emerged from the mangroves to hunt and peck for food at the side of the road.

Male & Female Key Deer, February 1997Key deer are similar to the white-tailed deer of the north, but they are smaller. They are considered an endangered species. The speed limit on U.S. 1 through Big Pine Key drops significantly since many deer have been struck by vehicles. As we drove through, the speed limit was being strictly enforced.

The Key Deer are curious to passers-by in vehicles, so please drive slowly and don't feed them!
